Learning Activity Information:

Cabinetry 101 for Architects is a practical session designed to help architects better integrate cabinetry planning into their design workflow—without needing to become a cabinetmaker. Cabinetry is often treated as a finishing detail, but its impact touches everything from HVAC placement to accessibility to fire compliance. Poor coordination can lead to failed inspections, site delays, or last-minute design compromises.

This session offers a crash course on cabinetry essentials: material choices, surface finishes, joinery, box construction, and building code implications. Through real-world examples, code fails, and collaboration tips, attendees will walk away with the confidence to make smarter cabinetry decisions earlier in the process—and avoid the most common and costly mistakes.

This activity also features a guided shop tour of Norelco Cabinets’ state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities- one of the only manufacturers in BC’s Interior certified by the Architectural Woodwork Manufacturers Association of Canada – bringing nationally recognized quality to every project.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify common cabinetry materials and finishes—and understand where and when to use each based on performance, durability, and budget.
  2. Apply building code and accessibility considerations to cabinetry design to avoid costly site revisions and inspection failures.
  3. Collaborate more effectively with cabinetmakers and trades by integrating cabinetry decisions early in the design and documentation process.
