There is a great program out there for BC companies that want to take the next step to expand or sell their operations.  Investors who recognize British Columbia as a safe harbour for investment can now take advantage of a Province of British Columbia online tool, OpportunitiesBC.

OpportunitiesBC is a searchable database of business and project opportunities throughout British Columbia that are suitable for investment — particularly foreign investment. As an investment attraction tool, the database has three functions:

  • to provide updated listings of eligible opportunities around the province to help investment seekers gain greater profile for their projects;
  • to serve as a portal for foreign visitors to explore opportunities in B.C. communities; and
  • to connect opportunity representatives with potential foreign investors.

Opportunities range from large-scale projects to small- and mid-sized businesses throughout British Columbia engaged in sectors that include:

  • Buildings and infrastructure
  • Commercial and industrial lands
  • Retail
  • Manufacturing
  • Agricultural land and food processing
  • Tourism and accommodations
  • International education
  • Technology
  • Natural resources

Businesses in British Columbia can submit opportunities to the database free of charge. Once local economic development officers vet entries, notification goes to B.C.’s trade and investment representatives (TIRs) who can present these opportunities to interested investors around the globe. The TIRs oversee 13 points of service around the world, including:

  • Nine in Asia (Tokyo, Japan; Seoul, South Korea; Mumbai, Chandigarh and Bangalore, India; and Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong, China);
  • A  European Union office based in London; and
  • Three satellite offices in the United States.

The TIRs bring immediate local market knowledge and access to large networks of key influencers within government and industry, as well as language, business and cultural skills to attract investment and connect B.C. businesses with new markets and opportunities.

The Economic Development Association of B.C. (EDABC), Venture Connect, Colliers, and Northern Development Initiative Trust, among others, are key partners supporting OpportunitiesBC.

OpportunitiesBC may be of interest to investors who would like to enter the British Columbia Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP).  This program accelerates the Permanent Resident application process for skilled and/or experienced workers, experienced business persons and their family members who want to settle in BC permanently.  The Business Immigrants component of the BC PNP considers applications from experienced business entrepreneurs who plan to invest in and actively manage an eligible business in B.C.  Together, OpportunitiesBC and the B.C. PNP align to support investors and B.C .companies looking to expand or sell their business and retire.
