Wood WORKS! BC is pleased to announce the nominees for the 2012
Wood Design Awards. The winners will be awarded at the 8th annual Wood Design Awards evening, to be held on Monday March 5th at the Vancouver Convention Centre West, recognizing leadership and innovation in wood use, while publicly saluting and encouraging continued excellence in the building and design community. More than 350 design and building professionals, including architects and engineers along with industry sponsors will be attending the evening event.

“We are once again truly inspired with the design achievements and innovative approaches to using wood, both as an architectural and structural material,” explains Mary Tracey, executive director of Wood WORKS! BC. “We’ve received more than 100 nominations in 12 categories for the 2012 Wood Design Awards, all showcasing the outstanding qualities of wood such as strength, beauty, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. A notable point about this year’s nominations was the sheer variety of projects – ranging from wood as art, to wood as a structural material. We are always awe-struck by what’s possible with wood.”

Submissions this year include international projects in South Africa and China, and from all over the province of BC – from Ahousat to Rossland; Vancouver to Kelowna; and from Smithers to Salt Spring Island. Nominated projects include a wood-signature cruise ship terminal building; wood-centred construction of schools; innovative design projects and engineered wood products; and restoration of a high wood trestle. There are new buildings and renovations, using new timber, engineered wood products, reclaimed wood and cross-laminated timber.
