The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) will require its certification holders to declare their commitment to occupational health and safety and that they are not involved in illegal logging as part of revised Chain of Custody requirements set to take effect Oct. 1, 2011.

The revised requirements also require certification holders to declare they are not violating “traditional and human rights in forestry operations, the destruction of high conservation values, significant conversion of forests to plantations or non-forest use, and the introduction of genetically modified organisms in forestry operations.”

By making these changes, FSC aims to highlight the respect of workers’ rights throughout the supply chain, according to an FSC release.
