The request forwarded by the provincial government for the District of Houston to adopt a wood first policy has already been a practice of Houston’s for awhile, chief administrative officer Gerry van der Wolf said.

As 2011 has been declared the year of forests by the United Nations, the province of B.C. is asking municipalities to consider to adopt a policy that would ensure that they consider the “performance of wood systems and products are considered whenever appropriate”.

Included in the policy is that when comparing costs of building with other competing materials, council takes into account all long-term and life cycle benefits to B.C. by using wood, as well as seeking those that can find practical, efficient, versatile, and cost-effective building and design solutions through the use of wood.

“A portion of the new buildings will need to reflect this,” van der Wolf said. “I think it’s important for Houston, given its location and dependancy on the industry.”
