Forests Minister Pat Bell had some surprisingly good news Wednesday.
It’s an industry that’s been in the doldrums for years, and with seemingly few bright spots on the horizon. But Pat Bell is smiling after Statistics Canada reported a 34 per-cent increase in lumber manufacturing in BC in the first half of the year, “When you look at how that spreads out, into China we’re seeing almost a 50% incremental growth, but one of the little hidden secrets this year, Japan’s up 43%, Korea 30%, the United States 16%. So things are starting to grow back, people are going back to work. I think it’s a good start to a long recovery.”
Bell says efforts will continue to boost the Asian market, although the U-S remains our main customer.
