National Forest Week kicked off Sunday, and the province of Manitoba is celebrating by giving away tree seedlings.

Urban trees provide shade and beauty in our cities and towns, while our rural forests clean out air and protect from soil erosion.

On Monday you can pick up tree seedlings at Manitoba Conservation offices in Lac du Bonnet, Flin Flon, The Pas, Cranberry Portage, Snow Lake and Winnipeg.

On Tuesday the tree giveaways happen at the Forks Market in Winnipeg, and the Riverbank Discovery Centre in Brandon.

Conservation Minister Bill Blaikie announced the plan to provide free tree seedlings to the public.

“In planting a tree, Manitoban’s can think about the historic, economic and social impact of trees in our world,” said Blaikie.
