Over the past year or so there has been a lot of interest expressed in Canadian style kitchens by building products importers. In the mid-90s, such kitchens enjoyed great popularity along with "imported housing." Unfortunately, since then European styles set the trends. That is why I have been curious about why the sudden resurgence in interest.
I wondered if they were seeing a lot more inquiries for kitchens or if they were sensing a new trend. The arrival of IKEA has definitely attracted a lot of attention recently for kitchens with solid wood doors. There also has been an increase in the number of small Japanese kitchen manufacturers who are pushing the Canadian look.
In Japan, TV celebrities are by far the biggest trend setters and conversely the biggest followers. That is why I was happy to see Canadian style cabinetry throughout a TV star's house (kitchen, vanities, shoes box, storage). This TV actress in her mid-30s (prime house building age) had just built a new house and was showing it off for the viewers of a popular TV variety show. She didn't say were they were from (they could have been domestically made), but the style was unmistakable. Usually people in her age group are drawn to the "simple & modern" European look, so this is a good sign that Canadian style kitchens are in fact making a comeback.
